Turn on Remote Desktop in Windows Vista

If you want to access your Vista PC from another Computer, it’s essential for you turn Remote Desktop ON, which is disabled by default in windows Vista. Don’t worry it’s very simple to turn it on.

Go to the configuration page, there are 2 ways to go to configuration page>

>>Right Click on my computer icon and choose properties,

>>Type system into the start menu search box. It will be the 4th item in the list.

Now you have to check Remote settings link on the left hand side. Now you can turn it on:

If you want to connect from another Computer (installed with Windows Vista) on the same network, click the bottom radio button. And if you want to connect to Windows XP or Windows 2000, then click the “Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote desktop” radio button. To connect from another Vista PC on the same network, click the bottom radio button. If you need to connect from an XP/2k machine, click the "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" radio button. Vista will automatically do the settings for firewall. But remember it will not work for home editions of vista.

Add More Functions to Office 2007 by Installing Add-Ins

I use Excel more often…I just can’t work without it. Excel is best for maintaing data. Yesterday I was exploring Microsoft Excel which was quite fruitful. They are many features in it. I m not talking about Vlookup and other formulas. I am talking about add ins, which you may not get bundled with Microsoft Office and not included with the initial installation, which can be easily accessed and installed. I would like to share my some of experience with you… may be these add ins cab be useful to Excel users as they are to me.
Open Excel and then click on Office button and go to Excel Options and then Add-ins.
In the View and Manage Office Add-ins window, near the bottom. Don’t forget t to select “Excel Add-ins” in the drop down box and click Go.
This will open up the Add-Ins window, there you can select an appropriate package for your Excel tasks. If you highlight each Add-In then you will be provided with a quick description of what each one is.
Like I installed the Euro Currency Tools. After choosing the one you want click OK and accept the default. You will get the progress message while the add-in is installing.
After the add-in is installed it will be available in the Ribbon. In this case the Euro Currency Tool was place under the Formulas tab other add-ins may vary. Other times you can install an add-in from downloading an executable from the Microsoft Office site. Of course there are also third party add-in programs that usually require purchasing a license after a trial period.

Find a Forgotten Password Saved in Firefox

Personally, I like Mozilla Firefox and I have been using it for years. Though I m not against Internet Explorer. But honestly speaking I like firefox because of its features and add ons.

Firefox, like many popular browsers, has a built-in functionality to save passwords. I often use the save password feature so often that I've completely forgotten my passwords when I need to login to the same website on another computer. But I got an easy way to locate those saved passwords.

In Firefox, navigate to the Tools \ Options menu item. Select the Privacy button, the Passwords tab, and then click on View Saved Passwords. You'll be presented with this screen:

Click the Show Passwords button, and navigate down to the website password you are looking for.

For me this was great help, as I tend to forget my passwords and the best feature in these browsers is that they offer to remember passwords…

How to Detect and Repair Applications In Microsoft Office 2007

I am fade up of crashing Microsoft Office application and locking. The things which I can’t handle in Microsoft office are Outlook and access.

Windows Office 2007 has a new feature (which replaces detect and repair) which allows you to diagnose and repair problems when they occur in your daily tasks.  The diagnostic utility can check the Windows system event log, hard drive, memory, application compatibility, updated service packs, and Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) if your hard drive supports it.  I know it sounds like a lot, but let me show you how easy this is to run.

Start \ Programs \ Microsoft Office \ Microsoft Office Tools \ Microsoft Office Diagnostics

The Microsoft Office Diagnostics splash screen will open.  Then Click Continue.

Next you are presented with the Start Diagnostics Screen showing you what is going to be checked and the status of each diagnostic.  When you are ready, click Run Diagnostics.

While the Diagnostics run you will see the status bars as each tests completes.  When it's complete, hit Continue.

You will get a limited detail of what was fixed.  In this example all 5 diagnostic tests ran and one problem was identified and fixed.  If you are ok with that just close out and you are done.  If you want to get additional information then click on "Detailed results" and you can get more information.

When you look close at the detailed information in this example you can see there was a problem with the installation and this tool automatically fixed it.

Unfortunately for an administrator or power user this utility "as is" does not display specific results (you need to explore it).  However when you are in a hurry and need your applications up and running to finish your work Microsoft Office Diagnostics works great!

Configure Auto Archive In Outlook 2007

Auto Archive is turned on by default in Outlook 2007 and will actually remove some of the oldest files (you determine the amount of time) completely.  If you have old e-mails which are really important then...I m here to help you to save those mails. Auto Archive is a feature in outlook which will automatically delete your e-mails after a specified period of time. To prevent that go to -

Open Outlook and click on Tools \ Options.

Now click on the other tab and click the AutoArchive button.

This opens up a whole menu of options and settings to pick from and from there you can make changes and save them accordingly: for instance you can choose how often AutoArchive runs.

Here you can decide for how long you want to keep your e-mails and after how many days you want to run auto archive ….like you can select 15 days or 20 days…or as much as you want… totally your call. I also place a check next to "Prompt before Auto Archive runs" just in case there is something I do not want delete. Isn’t it a great feature!!!

This is also where you decide when to clean out old items and the location to move them to.  Of course you can always select to permanently delete old items if you do not want to keep them around any longer.  Click OK and your settings are saved!

Backup Internet Explorer 7 Search Providers List

I m a regular user of Mozilla Firefox, though I use Internet Explorer as well… but I personally feel Firefox is best to surf the net. There are some web pages which are not best viewed in Internet Explorer (It’s not that, I just don’t want to sound bias).

I am both an IE user and a fan of using custom search providers in search box, you might be interested to know how you can back up that list and/or restore it on another computer. Since I'm a regular Firefox user I have lots of items in my search list.

Manual Registry Backup Method

If you are comfortable using the registry, you can just open up regedit.exe through the start menu search box and then navigate down to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes

Right-click on the SearchScopes key and choose to Export. Give the file a name and save it somewhere you are comfortable . To restore this list on another computer you should only have to double-click it.

Command Line Method

You can use the reg.exe method on the command line to backup this key. You can either paste this command into a command prompt or save it into a batch file.

reg export "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes" searchbackup.reg

And thus ends the mystery of backing up search providers.

As simple as it can be…. I  have many things to share with you…just stay tuned!!!!
